Description
Antique Copyrighted B'ham, ALA. 1904 Commercial Club Vulcan Statuette SouvenirSupposed to be the 1st Vulcan Statuette dated 1904 and is said to have been commissioned by Birmingham's Commercial Club to finance the building of a 56 foot 120,000 pound statue of Vulcan, the Roman god of fire and blacksmithing for the Louisiana Purchase Exposition at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair. An article for one like it pictured says they cast 2000 square-based, no-pedestal replicas and they were sold for each to finance the building of the large statue designed by Giuseppi Moretti.
After the exposition ended, Vulcan was sent home by train and was installed at the Alabama state fairgrounds in 1906. But, his raised right arm was accidentally installed upside down and without his spear, which had been lost along the way from St. Louis. The statue's arm remained that way for 30 years. Souvenirs from this time period (1906-1936) show his hand upside down with the palm up. There are many more interesting details to be found if you search for them. I wrote the details above myself from several accounts I found online.
