Gibson SG Standard 1966Description

Since it was announced as a successor to the Les Paul model in 1961, the Gibson SG has been a mainstay of guitar music due to it's feather weight, superb ergonomics and perfectly voiced, mid-focused tone. Like the Les Paul, SG specifications vary from year-to-year. This particular guitar dates from 1966 and as such has the reduced head angle of 14 degrees which changed from 17 in late '65. The nut width is around 40 mm, and the slim (but not super skinny) neck joins the body at the 19th fret. The position of the crown inlay lowered in the latter half of 1966, but the inlay on this example is still in the original position, while the truss rod cover sports narrow bevel with a narrow white border that appears from around 1965. The hardware is chrome plated and 1966 is the final year of the small, aesthetically pleasing pickguard.
A closer examination of the guitar reveals several mods, replaced hardware and some repairs. The input jack has a long crack repair that runs from the lower bout to the selector switch. It isn't the most beautiful repair we've seen, especially around the jack itself, but it's rock solid and will remain so. There is also a small crack at the neck joint but it too is in stable condition and won't worsen. The truss rod is functional in both directions. Regarding hardware, the tuning pegs are recent Gibson branded Kluson replacements, the nut is not original and the guitar was refretted with medium jumbos that are still in excellent shape with at least 80% remaining. Crucially, at some point the original vibrola was removed and the guitar was modified for a Nashville bridge with a stoptail piece. The original vibrola and bridge that were on the guitar are long gone but we have returned it to original spec with a dead stock 1960s vibrola (sans side screws which are new) and a used mid-1960s ABR-1 bridge with deadstock nylon saddles. We've left the stud holes and bushings from the stoptail as they are and used Nashville to ABR-1 conversion posts to re-install the bridge. Moving on to the electronics, the condenser and tone pots are original but both volume pots are more recent Gibson replacements. The original pickups were swapped out for some uninspiring high-powered ones at some point so we've opted to install a set of wonderful sounding replica PAFs from award winning manufacturer Monty's in the UK. Monty's has gained a lot of attention recently and for good reason. These pickups are perfect for this guitar; warm yet clear and articulate with superb touch sensitivity and wonderfully complex harmonics when driven. The aged nickel covers really suite the guitar as well.
A players SG then but with that old wood/nitro mojo and enough dents, scratches and weather checking throughout that you might be less squeamish about bringing it on the road. As the fretboard is Indian rather than Brazilian rosewood you could even tour internationally without CITES related hassle.
