    Description

    GJPaw
Auctions is pleased to offer an exquisite
    Pangalapang
, or tribal necklace shell choker from the Igorot people, Mayao Yao, Ifugao Province in the Philippines.
The Igorots are grouped into six ethno-linguistic groups, including the Ifugao.
    Ifugao
is named after the term \"i-pugo\" which means \"i\" (people) and \"pugo\" (hill),
that is to say earth people or mortals or humans, as distinguished from spirits and deities.
Anthropologists have regarded the Ifugao as possibly the oldest residents of the Province. Their origin attributed to Indonesian migration, dating back as early as 800-500 B.C. Agricultural terracing is their principal means of livelihood along with farming. Their social status is measured by the number of rice field granaries, family heirlooms, gold earrings, carabaos (water buffaloes), as well as, prestige conferred through time and tradition.
Social status is also conferred through attire and adornment. The
    wanno
or g-string is the traditional attire of male Ifugaos, and Ifugao women, on the contrary, wear tapis, a wraparound skirt.
The women also wear iconic prestige neck ornaments, or pangalapang, which is one of the most reproduced pieces of Philippine art. The pangalapang is meant to function as a sign of high social status. More commonly seen made of mother of pearl, this highly unusual example is made of mother of pearl and rattan. It measures 14 inches wide by 4 inches in depth by 13 inches in height (35.5 cm by 10.1 cm by 33.0 cm). The necklace is in beautiful condition, showing wear consistent with the mid-20th century, and it comes with a specially designed custom iron stand for display. Today, Philippine tribal art and adornment is becoming highly collectible. The quality of the raw materials used in this piece plus the artisanship displayed in its creation insures the piece’s uniqueness in the world of tribal adornment and suggests it can become a prized possession. It would make a fabulous addition to any collection of Philippine art, S.E. Asian art in general or any collection of jewelry.
